Beyond the Water Tower: Who Is TankMan?

When off duty, TankMan lives in a small suburban neighborhood outside of Perry, where he coaches his daughter’s soccer team and never misses his son’s baseball games. He attends Town Council and School Board meetings because he knows how important safe, quality water and utility asset management are to his community.

Timeline Icon Every Innovator Needs a Partner

In 1963, Utility Service Co. was founded in Madison, NC, to provide essential painting and maintenance services for municipal water tanks. Regulations and public health concerns made reliable water infrastructure critical.

Recognizing the need for a strong ambassador to bring this mission to life, the Utility Service Co. team introduced TankMan as a role model for water utility maintenance techs. He was designed to be the face of a movement to deliver safe, high-quality water.

Working closely with municipalities, TankMan discovered the financial strain caused by unpredictable tank maintenance. The solution? A subscription-based model with fixed annual fees, enabling towns to outsource complex maintenance needs without the significant upfront costs.

This innovative approach gained widespread praise and led to the company's move to Perry, Georgia, where it expanded throughout the 1990s.
