Our History

Learn about our history including key milestones, innovations, and growth, showcasing the evolution of USG Water Solutions.

Utility Service Co., Inc. (USCI) was founded in 1963 by entrepreneur Frank Graves Shelton in Madison, NC to provide painting and maintenance services for municipal water storage tanks. USCI quickly expanded its operations to cities across the Southeast United States. In the late 1980s, the company then branded as Utility Service Group (USG) pioneered a one-of-a-kind subscription-based maintenance program for storage tanks. The success of the program accelerated the growth of the company which relocated to Perry, GA in 1990, opening new headquarters and a service center. Over the next decade, USG continued to expand its geographic footprint through acquisitions of regional maintenance contractors, opening its first service center on the West Coast in 2001.

In the late 2000s, the company decided to expand its portfolio of services first, by launching a new water quality offering and later acquiring a contractor specializing in concrete restoration services for large water and wastewater facilities. In 2023, USG was acquired by the private investment firm, Turnspire Capital Partners LLC, which appointed John Flaugher, an industry veteran, as USG’s new CEO. The company, now known as USG Water Solutions, is ideally positioned for growth while remaining true to its core values of personalized and local service with an unwavering commitment to safety and quality.
